Dear Southern Wake Academy Staff, Parents, and Students:

The Board of Directors received an approval notice today from NCDPI for the new bylaws.  Thanks for your patience as they were not able to be published until we received legal approval - per instruction.

We appreciate your support and all of the interest.

BOARD PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

The next board meeting will be held virtually on May 12, 2020 at 7:00 p.m.  Information for non-board members who wish to attend the meeting will be posted on the website.  The Executive Committee has planned this meeting with a brief open meeting to conduct board business, followed by a closed session for board members only.  The primary business for the open meeting will be to elect board officers and to re-elect eligible board members seeking re-election.  The closed session, as permitted by North Carolina’s Open Meeting Law, will include only board members or individuals invited by the board president and whose attendance is needed to conduct the closed-session business.

The May 12th meeting, like that of April 26th, is designed to conduct business of the board.  The April 26th meeting was for the purpose of electing new board members who would be eligible to vote in the May meeting for the officers with whom they would be working in the next board cycle.  A DRAFT agenda is posted as a courtesy due to the virtual format of the meeting.

Because the previous meeting was publicized on Facebook and on SWA News in addition to the regular posting only on the website, there appears to have been an expectation that the board would address the coronavirus (COVID-19) and other school-related areas.  That was not the meeting’s purpose, perhaps contributing to frustration due to other expectations.

As a reminder to the SWA community, the board’s role is governance in the major areas of student/staff accountability, finance, and operations; board meeting agendas will be related to those areas, not general school information.  The board’s role is not to provide information from the school on activities and events past or future.  We are providing this clarification to preclude misperceptions as to what the board will be discussing or deciding during its meetings.

Based upon the experience of the previous meeting, the virtual meeting format will be different, hopefully making connection much simpler and creating more efficient use of time.

Thank you,

Lori Stokes, President
